BioShock Infinite Delayed to Next Year

BioShock Infinite--like protagonist Booker DeWitt here--is falling away from the 2012 release schedule.

The holiday release schedule just became a little less crowded, as Take-Two Interactive today announced that BioShock Infinite has been delayed to February 26, 2013.  In a statement, Irrational’s Ken Levine said that the game needs more time to become “something even more extraordinary.”  Also, in an update posted to IrrationalGames.com, Mr. Levine said that BioShock Infinite will not be shown at E3 or Gamescom this year.

-Nick’s take:  This is a shrewd move on Take-Two/Irrational’s part, since I don’t think BioShock Infinite would be a sales success in October.  Going up against Assassin’s Creed III, Halo 4, and Call of Duty:  Black Ops II would have been the death knell for the game as a commercial success.  Of course, we can’t ignore the fact that BioShock‘s departure from this year’s holiday release schedule leaves a gaping hole for Take-Two, one that could be filled with the release of Grand Theft Auto V

Microsoft Offers Xbox 360 For $99 With Contract

As was expected, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is now offering an Xbox 360 package that includes a Kinect sensor for only $99 in exchange for a 2-year contract to its Xbox Live Gold service at $15 per month. Meanwhile, Microsoft is also increasing its retail operations, however, the company’s retail locations remain somewhat small.

$99 4GB Xbox 360 Kinect Bundle Revealed

This could be yours for only $99! (Plus two-year Xbox Live Gold subscription at $15 per month.)

Following in the footsteps of cellphone providers, Microsoft has announced that the 4GB Xbox 360 bundle (which comes with Kinect) will be available at the low price of $99…with a two-year Xbox Live Gold subscription that will run you $15 a month.  A year’s worth of Xbox Live Gold usually costs $60 a year, which is significantly less than the $180 a year this subscription costs.  Like cellphone contracts, there is also an early termination fee associated with the $99 bundle’s Xbox Live Gold subscription, which can run consumers as high as $250 if they decide to cancel within the first three months (the fee gets much lower as time goes on, however).

It’s not all bad, though; not only are you getting an Xbox for $99, but you’re also getting Kinect (itself $150) and two years’ worth of Xbox Live Gold as long as you pay the $15 per month subscription fee.  In the end, though, the bundle still isn’t worth it; the price of the $99 bundle with two-year subscription ends up being $460, while the price of everything bought separately would be $420.

-Nick’s take:  For some, this deal might make sense, but I’d still stick with the traditional ‘buying everything upfront’ model if I were you.  If something changes and you can’t pay the $15 per month fee, you could be out a lot of money.  Plus, supporting this bundle might give Microsoft the idea that their next-gen system should be offered at this cellphone-like pricing model, which would not be good.  The bundle’s only currently available at the 21 Microsoft Store locations in the U.S., too, meaning that it’s unlikely you can even purchase this bundle right now.

Company of Heroes 2 Announced

The original Company of Heroes--released in 2006--was a great game. Let's hope the sequel is just as good. (first game shown)

After leaked images of the game from the U.K. magazine PC Gamer made the rounds online last week, THQ and developer Relic Entertainment have officially announced Company of Heroes 2 for the PC.  Company of Heroes 2 follows the eastern front of World War II, with players controlling Russian forces as they fight off the invading Nazis.  The game will take advantage of Relic’s new Essence 3.0 engine, which will bring “new technological advancements” to Company of Heroes 2, according to THQ.  The game will release early next year, but THQ has already announced that the game will be supported with DLC “that enhances and expands the product’s lifecycle.”

The first Company of Heroes game–also an RTS for the PC–launched back in 2006 and is considered one of the best RTS (real-time strategy) games ever made.  Since then, Relic has worked on the Warhammer 40,000:  Dawn of War franchise and was also developing Company of Heroes Online, an MMORTS that was cancelled early last year.

-Nick’s take:  After the cancellation of Company of Heroes Online, the fate of the franchise was in doubt.  I’m glad that THQ and Relic are making at least one more Company of Heroes RTS game–the first one was too good to not see a sequel.

The Telehuman Gives a Holographic, 360 Degree Projection

A team at Ontario’s Queen’s University have come up with the closest thing to an actual hologram we’ve seen in a while. Called the Telehuman, its constructed using Xbox hardware and other off-the-shelf parts.

What’s In The News: May 2, 2012

This is what’s in the news for Wednesday, May 2, 2012. The Wall Street Journal reports Facebook’s $3B a year advertising business revolves around convincing marketers to buy new forms of ads to create buzz around their brands, but some major advertisers wonder if they’re getting their money’s worth. Reuters reports a German court ruled that Microsoft (NYSE:MSFT) infringed Motorola Mobility’s (NYSE:MMI) patents and ordered Microsoft to remove its Xbox 360 gaming consoles and Windows 7 operating system software from the German market. Reuters also reports GM (NYSE:GM) had proposed taking a controlling stake of more than one-third in Isuzu Motors, worth about $3B, but now seeks a smaller holding after the Japanese truck maker said it wanted to remain independent, sources say. Bloomberg reports Oil fell from the highest level in five weeks as growing crude stockpiles in the U.S. and uncertainty before elections in three European countries raised concern that global demand may weaken. Finally, Bloomberg also reports Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) said a proposed Federal Reserve rule that seeks to limit links between banks could lower U.S. economic growth by as much as 0.4 percentage point and eliminate up to 300,000 jobs.

The Elder Scrolls Online Uncovered

The Elder Scrolls Online will feature the province of Skyrim, but will it also feature dragons?

The heavily rumored MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online has finally been revealed by Game Informer magazine.  Game Informer‘s June issue will have the full details on The Elder Scrolls Online, but we do know a bit about the game.

The Elder Scrolls Online will include the entire continent of Tamriel, including such familiar locales as Morrowind, Tamriel, and even Skyrim.  The Elder Scrolls Online is set 1,000 years before the events of The Elder Scrolls V:  Skyrim, when the daedric prince Molag Bal is trying to take over Tamriel.  The Elder Scrolls Online will feature solo questing and public dungeons, as well as a “player-driven PvP conflict (GameInformer.com)” that will pit three unrevealed factions against each other over the province of Cyrodiil (from The Elder Scrolls IV:  Oblivion).  The Elder Scrolls Online game director Matt Firor told Game Informer that “The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”

The Elder Scrolls Online will be coming to PC and Mac in 2013.  Those interested in the game should check out the June issue of Game Informer for the full scoop.

-Nick’s take:  Skyrim was a huge hit–selling over 10 million units–so there’s going to be a lot of people interested in The Elder Scrolls Online.  Can The Elder Scrolls Online finally be the MMO to dethrone World of WarcraftStar Wars:  The Old Republic wasn’t able to, but The Elder Scrolls is probably the biggest name in RPGs now, so maybe The Elder Scrolls Online will leverage the series’ name and history to become the new MMO king.
