Konami Pulls The Plug On Six Days In Fallujah

I am sure that the very idea that the video game is based on has already pricked one person too many. Whoever thought of the video game Six Days In Fallujah was bold. He (or them) really went out on a limb, and it seems that that limb is not going to hold. A mere several weeks after the intention to develop and release the game was announced, Konami is pulling out of the project.
This is due to the pressure that they have been receiving from various sectors, the strongest of which has come from retired soldiers, families, and citizen groups. I think that it is quite understandable that this kind of reaction would be expressed, and even more understandable that Konami would give in. According to a spokesperson of the group, “After seeing the reaction to the videogame in the United States and hearing opinions sent through phone calls and e-mail, we decided several days ago not to sell it. We had intended to convey the reality of the battles to players so that they could feel what it was like to be there.”
While the intention of the game developers might have been all good, the event is too recent, I think. It is much like movies relating somehow to the 911 attacks. A couple of years after it happened, no one could touch the subject, not even Hollywood. The wound was just too fresh back then. Perhaps it is the same thing with Fallujah. Perhaps in several years’ time, things would be different. For now, it is good that they decided to respect the wishes of those who were actually involved.
