Game FAQS’ Top 10 RPGs

RPGs, or role playing games, are arguably one of the most popular game genres today. I am sure that some will dispute this but that is to be expected. In an effort to showcase some of the best RPGs in existence, I looked up some expert opinions on this. I found a very good list over at Game FAQs and this is what they’ve got:

#10: Fire Emblem (Game Boy Advance)
#9: Final Fantasy III/VIj (SNES)
#8: EarthBound (SNES)
#7: Tales of Symphonia (Gamecube)
#6: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (Playstation 2)
#5: Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow (Game Boy)
#4: Final Fantasy II/IVj (SNES)
#3: Dragon Warrior (NES)
#2: Final Fantasy VII (Playstation)
#1: Final Fantasy Tactics (Playstation)
There will probably only be one game that I will call my favorite for the rest of my life, and that one game is Final Fantasy Tactics. Very few games manage to define and lead a genre almost ten years after the initial release, but even today Final Fantasy Tactics is easily the best strategy RPG out there, and possibly even the best RPG outright. It only has one flaw: the translation, which anyone can notice after playing the game for all of five minutes. Yet Final Fantasy 4 has a bad translation and is considered to be a masterpiece. Why can’t FFT have a bad translation and still be a 10/10 title? It does, and it is. Simple as that. FFT does three things absolutely perfectly: story, gameplay and soundtrack.

Looking at this list more closely, I think that it covers a lot of ground, although it is very much noticeable that the Final Fantasy franchise dominates. What do you think? Is this accurate or do you have your own list of the best RPGs?

*Note I only included a description of the #1 game. For the rest, you can visit the page at Game FAQs.
