World Of Warcraft “An anomaly” Says Panel
A discussion panel at the GCDC on Monday, made up of luminaries from the MMO world, analysed whether WoW has killed the MMO or not, coming to the conclusion that there’s plenty of life in the genre yet. Though they did say that the key to WoW’s success was its lack of innovation.
“They had an established franchise, a frantic customer base, and they executed extremely well. I think it’s an anomaly, and you can’t just focus on that because you’ll get yourself into trouble.”
Said panel member Robert Westmoreland from Cryptic Studios. Of course the panel could be said to be a tad biased based on the fact that they all have games in development at the moment. Cryptic Studios are currently working on Marvel Universe Online for the 360. Turbine, who’s Jeffrey Steefel was on the panel, have just released Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar on PC (doing exactly what it seems Westmoreland was saying should be avoided, it would seem). Jeff Hickman is currently involved in making Warhammer Online, the only game I see beating WoW in the near future, with EA Mythic and Matt Firor, who worked on Dark Ages Of Camelot at Mythic, is currently working on an undisclosed project for Zenimax Online Studios.
Of course they’re going to say that there’s a future for MMO’s after WoW, their jobs kind of depend on it, and I’m inclined to agree with them. WoW is dominant at the moment due to the reasons quoted above, an existing IP with a rabid, and huge, Fanbase, and the execution is pretty much flawless. The market will develope and mature with developers trying different things and new ways of approaching the genre. I’ve mentioned before my two bugbears with the current stock of MMO’s, namely grinding and collection missions, and hopefully there will be a brave company out there who’ll do away with them completely.
