Wii Controller Flies Into LCD TV
It finally happened to me. You know all the reports about Wii remotes flying into big screen TVs?
Well, to make the story short, let’s just say my mom was visiting for the first time since I had gotten my Wii.
Does that tell you enough;-)
The long version of the story: a few days after I got my Wii, I took the safety straps off. I knew for a fact that the Wii controller would not fly out of my hands, and the straps were getting on my nerves. So I took them off.
Well, when my mom came to visit for the first time since I got my Wii, I decided to show her Wii Bowling. She loved it. She bowled 3 rounds uneventfully getting one spare. Then I decided to tell her that you could do things like move around on the lane, put spin on the ball, and throw the ball faster depending on the speed at which you move your arm. Big mistake! On the very next throw, my Mom got a little too real. She put her whole mind and body into the throw, and literally let go of the Wii mote, full force…then the world went into slow motion as I saw the controller fly towards my big screen LCD tv.
My job dropped. And then it dropped even more when I saw a bright red spot on the screen where the controller had hit. I didn’t know how to react. I was a pretty pissed at what I thought of as my mom’s neglect. But I did what I had to do. I walked up to the TV to start the mourning process. I looked to see what damage had been left. Amazingly, I couldn’t even find scratch on the LCD screen. I was shocked. The red spot I had seen was just a temporary effect. It was gone and the TV was back to normal.
I have to give Samsung kudos for a great design on their LCD TVs. Somehow, someway, my mom’s launching a wii remote at fastball speeds into the front of my tv screen didn’t create any lasting harm. Boy am I thankful!

I take it that’s a lesson learned then. No matter how irritating they may be, the straps are staying on my Wiimotes. I’ve seen photos of too many expensive tellys wrecked by flying Wiimotes to risk it really. I’d hate to lose a grands worth of plasma TV just because a strap bugged me. I have seen a kind of rubberised holster for the Wiimote, if they added a velcro strap that went round your hand to that then you could get away with thrashing your arm around as much as you wanted at no risk to your TV.

Also, way to go on using the wrist strap!
