What The Wii Was Made For

lightsaber_wiimote.jpgI have said before that the ideal application of the Wii’s unique control system is a swordfighting/lightsaber title, well we may see that application in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed on Nintendo’s world beating console. While the 360 and PS3 versions of the title are being developed in house by LucasArts, and will be strictly single player affairs, development of the Wii version has been handed off to Krome Studios.

Responsible in the past for such ground breaking and revolutionary titles as Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Extremely Goofy Skateboarding, and Barbie Beach Vacation (yes that was sarcasm), Krome Studios have been given the task of porting LucasArts latest stawars based game to the Wii. As part of that job, they will be adding an exclusive 2 player battle mode.

Using the nunchuk to control force abilities and movement, while the Wiimote, doing what it was arguably designed to do, handles the lightsaber action, The Force Unleashed will have to be absolutely spot on to avoid disappointing Star Wars fans, who have been crying out for lightsaber duelling on the Wii since its release. If they don’t make use of the speaker in the Wiimote to emit the ubiquitous hum of the energy blade then they’ll probably be lynched.

The Force Unleashed see the player taking on the role of Darth Vader’s secret apprentice and is set between episodes III and IV. Helping Vader to rid the galaxy of Jedi will have the player facing decisions which could change their destiny. Unusually for a Star Wars Adventure, The Force Unleashed sees the player participating in the action from the dark side, rather than the light, and promises new revelations about the Star Wars universe.

I for one really hope they pull this off, as it says on my CV under hobbies and interests, I probably know more that is good for me about the franchise and would hate to see this opportunity wasted. Come on Krome, you know you can do it. Star Wars: The Force unleashed is due out on all the current consoles, the PS2, PSP and DS, in the spring of 2008, personally, I can’t wait.
