Unreal Engine Broken? Epic Served.
Silicon Knights, developers of Too Human, are suing Epic, developers of Unreal Tournament III for misrepresenting the capabilities of Epic’s Unreal Engine 3. Silicon claims that the engine provided was not a working game engine and that they have experienced considerable losses as a result.
The suit claims that Epic deliberately released an incomplete engine to its licensees so that its games, presumably made with an engine that was working, would look better. Adding weight to this allegation is the fact that many multi-platform titles which use UE3 have been delayed or scrapped altogether, namely; Stranglehold, Bioshock, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Turok, Frame City Killer, Fatal Inertia, and Brothers In Arms: Hells Highway.
Add to this the fact that UT3’s appearance on the PS3 was announced at E3 alongside the infromation that Epic would be working closely with Sony to “adjust” the engine for the console. This implies that UE3 wasn’t working properly on the PS3 in the first place. The evidence on Silicon’s side seems to be mounting up, though any compatibility problems between UE3 and the PS3 may be down to the architecture of the hardware rather than the engine as it seems to be working fine on PC’s and the 360.
Personally I get the taste of sour grapes from this story. Silicon Knights spent the weeks and months running up to E3 bigging up their game and then failed to show it, they have also been in development of Too Human since 1999 when they were developing it for the GameCube. Silicon Knights want extensive damages from Epic, amounting to the totality of the profits from Gears of War, which leads me to believe that the whole thing is about a strapped-for-cash developer wanting a slice of pie that they don’t deserve.
