UK Console Repair Company Turns Away Broken 360’s
Micromart, A UK based console repair company, Is refusing to repair any more Xbox 360’s and claims that they’ve found a basic fault in the console’s motherboard. The company was getting around 30 consoles a week with the same problem, their belief was that the best wat to repair it was to replace the motherboard with a non-faulty one, but Microsoft seem unwilling to help them out with any support information.
Microsoft’s console has been beset by reliability problems since its launch, leading some to claim that the design was rushed and corners were cut so that they could have the first HD console on the market. Recently a Dutch TV show demonstrated that the DVD drive in the 360 routinely scratches discs, and the number of returns for the so-called “Red Ring of Death” has been phenomenal. One customer has been through 11 consoles so far.
Because of the proprietory nature of the hardware in a 360 it seems that Microsoft is unwilling to supply spares to those willing to repair out of warranty consoles. Fears of reverse engineering and modification have been cited as reasons for their supplying only authorised repair companies. (From Firing Squad.)
