Sony Rumours Fly

ps3-black.jpgTwo rumours, possibly relating to the same thing, are racing around the interwebs at the moment. Ars Technica reports that “sources in the industry” have been saying that a $399, 40GB PS3 is in the offing, whilst Destructoid offers up a badly translated quote from GamePro France (Google Translation) which refers to October 12th as being a ‘big-bang’ date.

With the submission of a new model of PS3 to the FCC, revealed last week, speculation was that it was a cheaper, less feature packed, version of the PS3. It seems that these speculations have been given weight by Ars Techinca’s “sources”. Whether or not this will revitalise the fortunes of Sony’s beleaguered console is yet to be seen, as well as whether these rumours have any basis in fact. In my opinion $399 (probably $299 over here) is still too pricey for the PS3, remembering that this is the price (in the UK at least) of the Elite Edition 360.

I am of the opinion that the October 12th rumour is likely to be the announcement of this new PS3, based on the fact that the FCC has to hold back photo’s and other documentation for 45 days from the submission date, so as not to take the wind out of any marketing and advertising that the submitting company has lined up. I worked out that any announcement on Sony’s part would have to be made before October 19th, the date on which the FCC is permitted to reveal all. Of course this could be pure speculation and the ‘big bang’ could be about something else entirely.

It may even be that the translation is so bad that its been misinterpreted by non-french speaking games journos. Myself included.
