Looks Like Manhunt 2 Will Not Get Console Release

mh2_logo_rotated_copy_jpg_jpgcopy.jpgSince the BBFC’s decision, earlier this week, to deny Manhunt 2 a rating, effectively banning it in the UK, the game has been beset by obstacles.

First of all, Ireland has followed Britain in banning the title, with The Netherlands looking likely to follow suit, and the ESRB, the US’s version of the BBFC but for games only, has given the game an ‘Adults Only’ rating, meaning that Sony and Nintendo won’t allow it on their consoles. Sony said:

“Currently it’s SCE’s policy not to allow the playback of AO rated content on our systems.”

and Nintendo basically said the same:

“As stated on Nintendo.com, Nintendo does not allow any AO-rated content on its systems.”

Meanwhile, ELSPA, the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association, who represent the British computer and videogame industry, has gone from praising the BBFC’s ruling, saying that the ban:

“demonstrates that we have a games ratings system in the UK that is effective”

to questioning some of the language the BBFC used:

“I would say that I was surprised at some of the language the BBFC used when they reported on the matter, but we’ll be talking to them about that separately.”

Another nail in Manhunt 2’s coffin is the fact that Gamefly, the online game rental service, and Blockbuster have stated that they will not be carrying the title due to its AO rating. All these add up to the possibility that Manhunt 2 is going to disappear into the videogame ether. If you manage to get hold of an uncut version I’d keep a hold of it, it may be worth a pretty penny.
