GameTap Freeplay Goes Global, But Only If You Want To Play Myst Online

According to a press release, GameTap, the digital distribution service, has opened their new ad supported free games system to the entire world, Offering a rotating catalogue of 30 games, including some big names like Tomb Raider: Legend, free to play for a month if you have a GameTap ID. This all sounds well and good but apparently the only game you can play outside North America is Myst Online: Uru Live. You can’t even sign up for a GameTap ID if you’re not in either the US or Canada.

This is what the press release says:

Gamers who visit GameTap.com can now stay to play—for free. The first-of-its-kind broadband entertainment network from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.) has launched a free-to-play, ad-supported service that is accessible to more players—expanding beyond North America to reach a global audience. GameTap also announced the debut of its digital store, featuring a large library of titles from vintage to brand new.

“We’ve opened the door even wider—so that practically anyone with a broadband connection can give GameTap a spin,” said Stuart Snyder, Turner’s executive vice president and chief operating officer of Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media. “We want people to sample not just the massive library of GameTap titles, but the adrenalin rush that attracted over 20 million game plays last year.”

Now, if I go to Gametap.com and click the big green button to sign up for a free ID, I get this page. I’ve emailed GameTap’s Press department for clarification of whether the press release means that they have opened up access to all their free to play titles, but have yet to receive a reply. It also isn’t clear if their onlie digital store is open to the world or just North America. If anyone else outside the US is having problems signing up (or not) let me know, this is a mystery that I’m quite keen to get to the bottom of. More news as I get it.

Yeah, would be more use if it was in English. I don’t speak italian, if that’s what it is. The other thing is that the service is already meant to be available globally anyway without having to use a workaround, they said so in their press release.
