Church Takes Offense At BAFTA

resistance_fall_of_man.jpgThe Church of England, specifically that part of it which takes care of Manchester Cathedral, is not willing to let this non-issue go it seems. They’re offended that Resistance: Fall of Man, which drew their ire earlier this year, has been nominated for a BAFTA.

They claim that the nomination “is like rubbing salt in the wounds of the church”, and are pleading for it to be pulled. They also claim that the game’s inclusion in the BAFTA shortlist is a product of the increased sales that the game has pulled in, partly due to the publicity from the previous controversy. So they either want the nomination revoked or a cut of the proceeds, again.

What the church can’t seem to deal with is its increasing irrelevancy in today’s society. Dropping attendances and faltering funding are taking their toll, and the church, like any large organisation in such straits, is grabbing at publicity and/or funds wherever it can. I doubt that this will have any impact on the BAFTAs themselves except to garner even more publicity for a game which I feel doesn’t really warrant it. Since the award it’s nominated for is the PC World Gamers Award, which is the only BAFTA voted for by the public, the publicity generated by this ineffectual protest by the church is not going to harm the games chances of bagging an award any, I might even vote for it myself.
