Wii to become widely available Sunday Morning, December 17th
GamingMoments has received a tip indicating that the Nintendo Wii will become widely available for the first time since launch on Sunday Morning, December 17th. This does not mean that everyone will get a system. It simply means that for the first time since launch, supply will outstrip demand, at least in some areas. This does not bode well for those who are still holding onto systems in the hopes of selling them for a steep premium on eBay.
We’ve confirmed this tip from a variety of sources, though not from Nintendo itself. In addition to our various sources, we’ve also managed to confirm this report by getting our hands on early copies of the Sunday Morning paper advertisements. For the first time since launch, stores like BestBuy, Circuit City, GameStop, EB Games and Target are actively promoting the Wii on the front page of their advertisements. For the last several weeks, the Wii has been notoriously missnig from the Sunday advertisements, indicating an absence of supply.
This is the big story: Major retailers are now promoting the system in their paid advertisements because they actually have units to sell. This is a major turn of events.
So here’s the rest of the story. Best Buy is reporting that they will have at least 15 Wii’s per store. In larger areas, they will have significantly more. Further, in high demand areas, you can secure your Wii by lining up 1 hour prior to store openings and receiving a ticket. Tickets can then be exchanged for purchase when the store opens.
Circuit City is reporting a minimum of 20 per store.
So what does all this mean? It means that for the first time since launch, it will be worth your effort to go out early on Sunday and shop around for a Wii system at retail price. It does not mean that you are guaranteed to find one, but it does mean that you at least have a shot.
