Variations on Games

We all know that every family has its own house rules when it comes to games.  Sometimes this turns ugly, when, in the middle of a game, an argument emerges over this or that rule.

More interesting, though, is the way, over long periods of time, house rules become well accepted variations on gameplay.  Nigel over at BackGammonMoments describes an alternative version of backgammon called Narde.  Narde apparently has its origins back in 800AD and has largely been preserved to this day.

It would be fascinating to collect all the historical variations on gameplay of classic games that are known.  Does anyone know of a website that does this?  Of course there are dozens of variations on chess and poker.

What are your favorite gameplay variations?
