The Basics of a Game

Most people think that games have lots of secrets that one must learn over time.  This is partly true. But all the secrets are derived from a better understanding of the fundamentals of a game.  So it’s extremely important to learn the fundamentals inside and out.  That’ll make the finer details easier to learn and pretty soon you’ll discover that they aren’t secrets after all.

When I was first learning the basic rules of chess, I kept thinking … come on already, take me to the “secret strategies” that the experts use.  I was looking for those mystical chess panaceas!  The truth is, there really aren’t any chess secrets.  There’s just the basic rules, and becoming familiar with how the basic rules play out in a game.  You can only learn these “secrets” by actually playing.

Nigel at BlackJack Moments  has started a series of posts on the basics of blackjack.  He starts out with 4 posts on the basic rules and mechanics of the game and moves into some basic strategy.  Notice the progression.  Start with the basic rules and mechanics and from these, you can derive all the strategies… there are no secrets.  Really.

Blackjack is a simple game.  Backgammon  is quite a bit more complicated which probably explains its lower popularity.  Still, the same general rules apply.   Start with the basic rules of backgammon then move on to some of the strategies that build upon the basic rules.

There are no real secrets to gaming or shortcuts.  It really all boils down to learning the rules inside out, then applying the rules in game situations.  Soon you’ll discover how the dynamics of the game play out, and consequently, what works and what doesn’t.
