Gaming and Religion

Sparky has a fascinating post over at PokerMoments on Quakerism and Poker.  In the post, she argues that Quakers are opposed to gambling and poker because of some basic principles like “100% honesty in communcation” and “you don’t get something for nothing.

Since religion is at the center of so many people’s lives, not just nominally, but at the core of how they live, it makes sense to ask what reasons someone might have for objecting to various games that involve deceipt of any kind.  The ancient philosophers, for example, knew that if a person conducted themselves in a certain way they’d habituate into that way of life.  So the worry probably is that by playing an “innocent” game too much, we might habituate ourselves to certain be associated behaviors and exhibit them elsewhere.

Thought provoking, huh?
