Classic Board Games: Candy Land

Candy Land was my favorite game as a little girl. In fact my sister and I rarely played any other board game. We never grew tired of the surprise of flipping the color cards, one by one, to see where we could move our ginger bread men. Part of the fun was scrupulously watching each other to make sure that there was no cheating.
Remembering my enchantment with this land of candy, I recently bought the game at a yard sale to play when my 8 year old niece visited. I was relieved that she knew and liked the game, fearing in the 20 years since I was a child that fast-paced video games would have rendered Candy Land too dull and simplistic. And I was pleased that she could inform me of the rules, which were refreshingly straight-forward, unlike too many adult games that require hour’s long study of book-length directions before beginning.
When either my niece or I came close to winning the game, and were forced to return to Peppermint Stick Forest, losing all progress, I was transported back to my childhood grapplings with chance and fairness. I was reminded that even though life’s journey is hardly straight, at least there are opportunities for some colorful experiences, interesting places and unique characters along the way.
