Casino. A Great Film.

My step-father is an old Vegas type- diamond ring on the finger et al- I call him “Poppa Joey”. If you have seen the film “Casino“, he is featured as a one of the bag handlers for Frank Rosenthal, known in the film as Sam Rothstein- played by Robert De Niro, and Anthony Spilotro, known as Nicky Santoro, played brilliantly by Joe Pesci.
The plot for “Casino” was largely based on fact and really represents the old “glamour” (if you can call brutal Mafioso killings that) of Las Vegas and, in reality, the whole world of offline gambling in the US in the post-war era. Sharon Stone plays Ginger, and Poppa Joey tells me that she really was the most beautiful, and the wildest, of women.

Just maybe a sense of that “glamour” is returning to the gaming world. With the surge in online betting and homemade professional poker players en masse appearing, there is a global feeling of “I am the new dude in town“. Sites like Poker Moments have become so popular, as the “image” of being a gambling pro is very much a potential reality. You really might be the next World Poker Champion.

Films, like websites, can cause such inspiration. Chris Moneymaker is said to have started poker after watching Rounders- which, like Casino, is a great film.
